Holding a Grunge

Location: Seattle, Washington

Yesterday afternoon we kicked off our 2016 super trip. We began by flying from Maryland to Seattle. We had a direct and uneventful flight. Ryan might have had some misunderstandings about the area. He was expecting Starbucks flowing out of the water fountains and grunge music blasting from klaxons at every street corner. We didn’t see any Starbucks at the airport, and it was a long 12 minutes before we heard Nirvana playing over the airport speakers.

We woke up really early this morning (6 AM) because we had a full day planned. We got breakfast at the hotel and then took the Link into town to get to all the tourist places. Our first stop took us to Pike’s Place Market and the first Starbucks.

Then we went to the Seattle Aquarium as soon as it opened. It was a modest sized aquarium with a more kid friendly  presentation style. Besides the usual fish, the highlights of the aquarium included puffins, sea otters, and river otters.

We then went over a couple piers to go on a harbor cruise with Argosy Cruises. We took an hour long loop around the harbor, with a knowledgeable narrator providing humorous history of the bay and city. We even saw a sea lion chilling out on a buoy.

For lunch we went back to Pike’s Place Market for lunch. We got Mediterranean sandwiches. Then we helped burn off lunch by walking a mile to the EMP Museum.

By shear coincidence, it was the opening day of the Star Trek exhibit at the museum. We got to see many artifacts from the many shows and movies. They even had some interactive sets for picture taking purposes.

The museum also had exhibits paying homage to other science fiction shows and movies, as well as Nirvana.

We still had time left in the day, so we went to the Pacific Science Center. But we were too late to see one of the IMAX movies, and the exhibits were heavily focused towards children so we didn’t spend much time here.

So we finished our tourism day by visiting the Space Needle. It was a very long line to get up to the top. In all, it probably took over an hour to wait in the various lines and make it too the top. Readers planning a trip here, should pick up their tickets for a set time in advanced, go see something else, then come back. It will save you time.

After the Space Needle, we took the monorail to Westlake Mall then took the Link back to the airport hotel. Along the way we passed Piped-in-Noise Football Stadium (home of the 12th bandwagon fan) and Wheely-Roof baseball Stadium. 😉

In all, we spent over 14 hours walking and playing tourist today!

Tomorrow we take a very early flight to Anchorage and begin our Alaskan Adventure.
