A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

Location: Rome, Italy

Today was another one of those long travel days. Our flight out of Dulles was delayed nearly three hours due to multiple unrelated mechanical delays. But eventually United got us off the ground and safely to Rome. On a side note we would also like to point out that one should avoid the exit rows on a 777 at all costs; reduced seat width, next to the bathrooms, no under front seat storage and you can’t watch the movies during take off and landing. The baggage claim at Rome FCO was similarily slow and chaotic but we eventually got through it and found our way to the hotel shuttle. Check in at the Marriott Rome Park hotel went smoothly,  we settled in and took a two hour nap, to make up for our lack of sleep on the plane.

Around 4:00 we took the hotel shuttle into town to explore. We walked from Piazza del Tribunali to Piazza Venezia in about 40 min. Along the way we stopped to take pictures at Piazza Navona and humongous Menumento a Vittorio Emanuele II. After taking a late lunch we walked around the imperial forum. We watched a few minutes of the Belgium-Argentina World Cup game. The city set up a large screen for people to watch the game on Via del Fori Imperiali. It was Belguim versus Argentina, so of course we were rooting for Argentina!

Todays main event, the Colosseum and Ancient Rome by Night Tour. Our very knowledgeable guide Anna took us and twenty others on a walking tour of the ancient Roman ruins and the more modern tenants of those buildings. She showed and explained to us the Campidoglio and the Roman Forum. The main event was an after dark tour of the Collosseum. We were the only people inside so it was an intimate experience that allowed for great pictures. We saw the catacombs and walked along the third teir.

After the tour we travelled back towards Piazza del Tribunai to catch the shuttle. We stopped at Zio Ciro for gellati and watched the first half of the Coasta Rica-Netherlands world cup game. Because when in Rome…

Tomorrow is a free day to explore Rome.
